Course Prerequisites

As might be expected, several chemistry courses have prerequisites. The purpose of a prerequisite is to help ensure that enrolled students have the necessary skills for success in a given course.

Of particular note, the prerequisites for first-semester general chemistry (CHEM 111AF) are:

CHEM 107 F Preparation for General Chemistry OR Passing Score on Chemistry Proficiency Exam

AND

MATH 141 F College Algebra OR MATH 141HF Honors College Algebra OR MATH 143 F Enhanced College Algebra

Students who want to enroll into CHEM 111AF will need to satisfy both the chemistry and mathematics prerequisites prior to registration.

Students who wish to enroll into CHEM 111AF without prior completion of CHEM 107 F must submit a prerequisite challenge form. This request would then be reviewed by the course coordinator, department coordinator, and division dean. Additional information regarding prerequisites can be found on the Admissions and Records website.

Whereas the faculty of the Chemistry Department recommend that students complete CHEM 107 F prior to entering CHEM 111AF, some individuals would rather attempt entry into the course via the proficiency exam.
