Earth Sciences Department
Our Mission
We are commited to providing high-quality education to:
Build a Strong Foundation
Build a strong foundation in Earth sciences for all students, whether they are preparing to transfer to a four-year university, seeking an associate degree, or exploring career opportunities in the geosciences.
Foster scientific inquiry
Empower environmental solutions
Degrees Offered
Associate in Science in Geology (A.S.)
This Geology Associate in Science Degree is designed to introduce the student to the field of geology. Students who complete the degree will be prepared for future study in geology or related fields.
Associate in Science Geology for Transfer (A.S.T.)
Associate in Science in Earth Science (A.S.)
Associate in Science in Oceanography (A.S.) [New Fall 2025]
Associate in Science in Meteorology (A.S.) [New Fall 2025]
Our Focus

Field Trips and Local Exploration
Our department values an interdisciplinary approach, integrating physical, chemical, and biological perspectives to help students understand the Earth system. We emphasize hands-on learning through lectures, labs, and field experiences, and support students in meeting physical science requirements for transfer.

Hands-On Lab Experiences
Our lab courses provide students with practical, hands-on experiences using scientific tools and techniques. In the lab, students analyze rocks, minerals, and fossils, interpret weather and climate data, and conduct experiments that reinforce key concepts from lectures. These experiences are designed to build scientific skills and confidence, preparing students for further study or entry-level positions in science-related fields.

Lecture Courses
We offer a variety of lecture courses, including:
Geology: Explore the structure of the Earth, plate tectonics, earthquakes, volcanoes, coastlines, mountains, and the processes that shape our planet’s surface.
Oceanography: Study the physical, chemical, and biological aspects of the world’s oceans, including local currents, beach and coastal processes, marine life, and the global impacts of the ocean.
Weather and Climate: Learn about atmospheric processes, weather patterns, climate systems, and the impacts of climate change on local and global scales.

Commitment to Inclusion and Community
We are dedicated to fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment. Our faculty and staff are committed to student success, providing resources and mentorship to help all students thrive. We encourage collaboration, respect, and engagement within our diverse campus community.
Whether you are beginning your journey in Earth sciences, planning to transfer, or looking to make a difference in your community, we invite you to explore the opportunities in our department.
